Giant clams and anemones get much of their food from light, through algae living in their tissue. They need strong lighting, mature, stable tanks and experienced care.

Light and placement

Place clams on rock or sand under strong reef lighting, where they won't be shaded. Anemones wander until they find a spot they like; cover pump intakes so they aren't hurt.

Water

Keep calcium, alkalinity and magnesium stable for clams. Add these only to a tank that's been running well for six months or more.

CITES

Giant clams are listed on CITES Appendix II; most sold today are aquacultured. Anemones sold by hobbyists are usually split from captive anemones.
