- Sulcatas grow to 40–90 kg and can live over 70 years. They need a large, heated outdoor space and a plan for their whole life.
- CITES
- Appendix II
Tortoises live 50 years or more, so a tortoise is often a family member for generations. They need space, strong UVB light, a diet of weeds and greens, and a plan for winter.
Shell size and the law
In the US and Canada, turtles and tortoises can't be sold until their shell is at least about 10 cm (4 inches) long. Responsible sellers keep hatchlings until they reach that size.
Space, heat and light
Give a large open enclosure (a tortoise table, not a glass tank) with a basking spot, UVB light and a hide, plus outdoor time in a secure, predator-proof pen in warm weather. Sulcatas grow huge and need a large heated outdoor area.
Diet
Most tortoises eat weeds, grasses and leafy greens with a calcium supplement. Fruit is for tropical species like red-footed tortoises only. Soak young tortoises regularly to keep them hydrated.
Winter and brumation
Some Mediterranean tortoises slow down or brumate in winter. Only do this with a healthy tortoise and your vet's guidance.
