Care guide

Caring for livebearers

This guide covers Molly and the other species that need the same care. Ask the seller about anything particular to Molly.

Adult size
About 10 cm
Water temperature
24–28 °C
pH
7.5–8.5
Smallest tank
75 litres
Temperament
Peaceful
Care level
Moderate

Guppies, platies, mollies, swordtails and Endler's give birth to live young. They're hardy, colourful and active, and they breed readily, so plan for the babies.

Water

Most livebearers prefer harder, slightly alkaline water (pH 7 to 8). Keep the tank cycled and change part of the water weekly.

Babies

Females can give birth every month or so and store sperm for several broods. Keep more females than males so no female is harassed, and give fry plants to hide in, or keep only one sex if you don't want young.

Food

Feed a quality flake or micro-pellet with some vegetable matter, and occasional frozen or live foods.
