Rabbits live 8 to 12 years, need a companion rabbit, lots of space, a diet that's mostly hay, and a vet who knows rabbits. They're clever and affectionate, but rarely like being picked up.
A friend and room to run
Rabbits are social and do best in a spayed and neutered pair. Bond them slowly with a rabbit-savvy vet or rescue organisation's advice.
A hutch or cage alone isn't enough. Give them a large pen or a rabbit-proofed room with space to run and jump, hiding places, and daily exercise.
Diet
Unlimited fresh grass hay (such as timothy) should be most of the diet, plus a handful of leafy greens daily and a small amount of plain pellets. Fruit and carrots are treats only.
A rabbit that stops eating or pooping for even 12 hours may have gut stasis, an emergency. Call your vet.
Health
Vaccinate against rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHDV2), which has spread in Canada and the US and kills quickly. Ask your vet about the vaccine.
Spaying females prevents uterine cancer, which is very common in older unspayed does, and both sexes are easier to bond and litter-train once neutered.
Rabbits overheat easily. Keep them cool and shaded above about 25°C.
Handling
Most rabbits prefer to stay on the ground. Sit with them and let them come to you. If you must lift them, support their chest and back end; a kick can break their spine.
