Leopard and crested geckos are among the easiest reptiles to keep well. Leopard geckos live on the ground and eat insects; crested geckos climb and eat a fruit-based diet with insects.
Enclosure
Leopard geckos need a floor-space enclosure (at least about 90 × 45 cm for an adult) with a warm hide, a cool hide and a humid hide for shedding. Avoid loose sand for young geckos.
Crested and gargoyle geckos need a tall enclosure (at least about 45 × 45 × 90 cm) with branches and plants, misted daily, kept below about 27°C.
Diet
Leopard geckos eat gut-loaded insects dusted with calcium and vitamins. Crested geckos do well on a complete powdered gecko diet plus some insects.
Handling
Most geckos can drop their tail if grabbed or scared; it may grow back differently, and crested geckos' doesn't grow back at all. Let them walk onto your hand, and keep sessions short at first.
Health to ask about
Ask if the seller tests for cryptosporidium, a gut parasite that causes weight loss in leopard geckos. Watch for stuck shed on toes and tails.
