Care guide
Caring for axolotls
Axolotls are aquatic salamanders that live 10 to 15 years. They need cool, clean water, a large tank and a gentle environment, and they're banned in some places.
Cool, clean water
Keep the water between about 14 and 20°C; warm water stresses them and can kill them. Use a cycled tank of at least 75 litres with a gentle filter, and test the water regularly.
Use fine sand or a bare bottom; axolotls swallow gravel, which can block their gut.
Diet
Feed earthworms, axolotl pellets and bloodworms. Remove leftovers so they don't foul the water.
Local rules
Axolotls aren't allowed as pets in California, Maine or New Jersey, and need a permit in some other places. Check your local rules.
