Herding breeds such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds and German Shepherds are intelligent, energetic and eager to work. They thrive with daily exercise, training and a job to do.

Born to work

Herding dogs need physical exercise and mental work every day: long walks or runs plus training, puzzles, agility, herding or other dog sports. Without it they often invent jobs, like chasing cars or herding children.

Some will nip at heels when they're excited; redirect it early with toys and training.

Training

They learn fast, including habits you'd rather they didn't. Be consistent, keep sessions fun, and keep teaching new things throughout their life.

Health to ask about

Ask about the parents' hip and elbow results, eye exams and breed DNA tests. Collies, Shelties, Aussies and some others can carry the MDR1 gene, which makes some common medications dangerous; a DNA test tells your vet what's safe.

Coat care

Many herding breeds have double coats that shed heavily. Brush several times a week, and more during seasonal sheds. Don't shave a double coat; it helps keep them cool and warm.
