Crossbreeds such as doodles and Cavapoos combine two breeds. They can inherit the traits and health concerns of either parent breed, so learn about both and ask about both parents' health tests.
Look at both parent breeds
A cross's size, energy, coat and temperament can be anywhere between its parents', and puppies in one litter can differ. Meeting the parents tells you the most.
Ask the breeder which generation the litter is (for example F1, F1b or multigeneration); this affects how predictable the coat and size are.
Health testing
Mixing breeds doesn't remove inherited problems: both parents should have the health tests recommended for their own breeds, such as hips, elbows, eyes, heart and DNA tests. Ask to see the results.
Coat and allergies
Poodle crosses often have low-shedding coats that keep growing and need professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks and regular brushing to prevent mats.
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. If someone at home has allergies, spend time with the puppy's parents before deciding.
Exercise and training
Many popular crosses come from active breeds such as retrievers, poodles and Australian Shepherds. Plan for daily exercise and reward-based training.
