Longhaired breeds such as Persians, Maine Coons and Ragdolls are beautiful and often gentle, but their coats need regular grooming to stay free of mats.
Grooming
Comb a longhaired cat several times a week (Persians and Himalayans daily), working through the belly, armpits and behind the ears where mats form. Start gently while they're young.
Trim the hair around their bottom if it gets soiled, and keep their eyes clean; flat-faced breeds often have tear staining.
Flat-faced breeds
Persians, Himalayans and Exotics have short faces that can affect their breathing, eyes and teeth. Choose a breeder who avoids extreme faces, and see your vet about any breathing noise or eye discharge.
Large breeds
Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cats, Ragdolls and Siberians are slow to mature, often until 3 to 5 years, and can weigh 8 kg or more. Get sturdy cat trees and large litter boxes.
Health to ask about
Ask about heart (HCM) scans and DNA tests for the breed, kidney (PKD) tests for Persians and related breeds, and hip scores and SMA tests for Maine Coons.
