Shorthaired breeds range from the calm British Shorthair to the busy Abyssinian and talkative Siamese. Their coats are easy to care for; their energy and personalities vary a lot by breed.
Coat care
A weekly brush removes loose hair and is a good chance to check their skin. Brush more during seasonal sheds.
Energy and company
Oriental breeds such as Siamese and Abyssinians are active, social and vocal; they do best with company for much of the day, often another cat.
Calmer breeds such as British Shorthairs and Chartreux are content with a quieter home but still need daily play.
Health to ask about
Ask about the tests their breed calls for: heart (HCM) scans for many breeds, kidney (PKD) tests for British Shorthairs and Exotics, and PRA or PK deficiency DNA tests for Abyssinians and related breeds.
Breeds with welfare concerns
Every Scottish Fold has the cartilage condition that folds its ears, which can lead to painful arthritis. Manx and other tailless cats can have spine problems. Read the breed's welfare note, ask the breeder how they protect their kittens' health, and never breed two folds together.
