Appendix II

Severe macaws are small macaws with big personalities: clever, affectionate, often good talkers, and loud for their size.

A long commitment

With good care many live 30 to 50 years, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.

They call loudly in the morning and evening; meet a bird before you buy and think about neighbours if you live in an apartment.

Housing

A cage at least 75 cm wide with 1.9 to 2.5 cm bar spacing, a play stand, and several hours out of the cage. They chew a lot: give plenty of safe wood and cardboard.

Diet

A quality pellet, vegetables and fruit every day, and a few nuts as treats and rewards.
