Rainbow lorikeets are brilliantly coloured, playful parrots that eat nectar, pollen and fruit rather than seed. They're messy and need fresh food every day.
A nectar and fruit diet
Feed a lorikeet nectar or dry lorikeet powder made for them, with fresh fruit, flowers and vegetables, and change wet food before it spoils (twice a day in warm weather). Don't feed a seed diet.
Housing and cleaning
Their droppings are liquid, so a cage with easy-to-clean surfaces (or an aviary) helps. A cage at least 75 cm wide, a bath most days, and lots of toys.
With good care many live 15 to 30 years, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.
Noise
They're noisy and screech often, especially in the morning and evening.
