Moluccan cockatoo care

Typical lifespan

Very loud

Moluccan cockatoos are affectionate, intelligent and very social. They need several hours of attention every day, a lot to chew, and an experienced home; bored or lonely cockatoos often scream or pull their feathers.

Needs a lot of time

Cockatoos bond closely and can become demanding. Without enough attention and things to do they may scream for long periods or pluck their feathers, which is hard to undo.

With good care many live 40 to 60 years or more, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.

Housing and enrichment

A large, sturdy cage with secure locks (cockatoos learn to open simple latches), a play stand, and plenty of time out every day. Offer wood, cardboard and foraging toys to destroy.

Cockatoos make a fine powder from their feathers. Good ventilation and an air purifier help people with allergies.

Diet

A quality pellet with plenty of vegetables, some fruit, and seeds and nuts only as treats. Many cockatoos gain weight easily.
