Eclectus parrot care
- Typical lifespan
- 30–50 years
- Size
- Medium
- Noise level
- Moderate
Eclectus are calm, gentle parrots where males are green and females red and purple. Their digestion is suited to a fresh, high-fibre diet, which matters more for them than for most parrots.
A fresh, high-fibre diet
Feed plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit and sprouted seeds, with pellets as a smaller part of the diet. Many vets advise avoiding heavily fortified foods and extra vitamin supplements, which eclectus can be sensitive to. Ask an avian vet to help plan the diet.
Housing
A cage at least 90 cm wide with 1.9 to 2.5 cm bar spacing, daily time out, and toys to chew and forage. Eclectus are often quieter and more reserved than other large parrots.
With good care many live 30 to 50 years or more, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.
Watch for
Toe tapping or wing flipping can be a sign of diet problems or stress. See an avian vet if you notice them.
