Care guide
Caring for freshwater snails
Snails clean algae and leftovers. Nerites, mystery snails and rabbit snails are popular; assassin snails control pest snails. Most need hard water to build healthy shells.
Healthy shells
Snails need calcium. Keep pH and hardness up (pH 7 or more) and offer calcium-rich foods; pitted or thin shells are a sign of soft water.
Breeding
Some snails, like Malaysian trumpet snails, breed fast in tanks with lots of food. Nerites lay eggs but need brackish water to hatch.
Local rules
Some places restrict non-native snails, including some apple snails. Check your local rules, and never release snails or plants into the wild.
