Care guide
Caring for freshwater shrimp
Dwarf shrimp like cherry and crystal shrimp are colourful, busy cleaners. They need a mature, stable tank, the right water for their species, and no fish big enough to eat them.
Stable water
Shrimp are sensitive to sudden changes, copper and many medications. Acclimate them slowly, and match the water the seller keeps them in; crystal shrimp need soft, acidic water, cherry shrimp are more forgiving.
Moulting
Shrimp shed their shells as they grow. Leave old shells in the tank; they eat them for minerals.
Food and company
They graze biofilm and algae; add a little shrimp food a few times a week. Keep a group, with small peaceful fish or none.
