Caring for cichlids

Cichlids range from tiny shell-dwellers and dwarf cichlids to large, territorial fish like Oscars. Many are clever, interactive and great parents, but tank size and tankmates matter a lot.

Know your cichlid

South American dwarf cichlids (rams, Apistogramma) and angelfish like soft, warm water. African Rift Lake cichlids (peacocks, yellow labs, multies) need hard, alkaline water and are best kept with their own kind.

Large cichlids such as Oscars need very large tanks and strong filtration.

Territory

Many cichlids defend territory, especially when breeding. Provide caves and rockwork, and don't overstock unless you're keeping Malawi cichlids on purpose in a busy tank.

Parents

Many cichlids guard eggs and fry. Give a breeding pair space and be ready to move other fish if they become aggressive.
